Sandy Hook Shooting: The Speculation About Adam Lanza Must Stop

A compelling narrative has emerged but we have few facts to back it up

There are a number of things we think we know about Adam Lanza, the Newtown, Connecticut 20-year-old, who last Friday murdered his mother, then shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 20 first-graders and six adults before turning a gun on himself.

We’ve been told, by a former classmate, that he was “weird.”  We’ve been told, by a family friend, that he played a lot of violent video games. And we’ve also been told by such sources that he had a “developmental disorder,” that some say was Asperger’s Syndrome.

(MOREWhy Did Adam Lanza Target A School?)

From this, a narrative has emerged of a troubled young man, induced into violence by his preferred choice of media, and failed by an inadequate mental health system. This narrative has caught on so successfully that, as of Wednesday, a Gallup poll found far more Americans believing that events like the Newtown tragedy could be avoided through increased federal spending on mental health screening and services than by banning the sale of assault weapons.

And yet, in truth, we have virtually no hard facts to back up this storyline.

How often did Lanza play the most violent games? How did he feel about them? How did they affect him? Did they desensitize him to violence or provoke blood lust? We don’t know, and most likely never will.

(MORE: Is There A Backlash Against Children With Autism?)

Did he really have Asperger’s? Was he diagnosed with anything in addition to the “developmental disorder” — or was that just a palatable-sounding phrase his family and family friends used to avoid invoking scarier, more threatening terms like “mental illness”? We don’t know what lay behind the extremely inward-turned behavior his classmates saw, or the murderous violence that erupted last week. Was it extreme, toxic anxiety? Paranoia? Voices? Righteous rage? We may never know.

We don’t know that Lanza’s crime represents a failure of our “system” of mental health care in America, as has been said countless times this week, because we don’t know what, if any, mental health care he was receiving in recent years at all. Although a babysitter has said that Lanza took medication as a child, we don’t know what kind of medication it was. We don’t know what the Lanzas’ attitude toward mental health care was. Did Nancy, who homeschooled Adam for years, reject the mainstream beliefs of child psychiatry, as many in the home-schooling community do?

(MOREViewpoint: Don’t Blame Video Games for Mass Shooting)

There are exactly two rock-solid, actionable facts in the Adam Lanza story. He lived in a home filled with firearms. And had he not had access to semi-automatic weapons, he would not have been able to take 26 lives in a matter of minutes. These facts are now being buried in an onslaught of supposition about the effects of video game violence and the need — which I otherwise entirely agree with — for more and better mental health care for America’s kids.

The incontrovertible facts of the Lanza case are, for now, what we as a nation should be focusing on as we come to terms with the Newtown tragedy. All the rest is just talk.

Adam Lanza is a fictitious character. He is made up of the smallest of spare parts.

Those players, with real faces, who have sold their services for a few pieces of silver, will eventually be silenced forever.

It can be no other way.

Now that there are more facts out, Let's talk about Adam's obsession with Columbine and his file of pedophilic material. Adam learned that his hero Eric Harris had been sodomized during an arrest. He learned that because of his interest in Columbine. Google January Incident. He learned that Harris had been raped by going to www.columbinefamilyrequest.org  We are the families of the Columbine dead and injured. We did our own investigation and learned the written motive was to get even for the January Incident which was Eric and Dylan's arrest for breaking into a van. We found a page in the Columbine investigation  page 10589 in which Harris drew a picture with 2 stick figures. One on all fours the other, in a position to sodomize with a star on it's chest. We later discovered this picture in an ElPaso County file labeled Walsh buttrape.txt. google walshbuttrape.txt.

Adam Lanza claims that he was raped in this video on youtube posted one day before the tragedy entitled I am Adam Lanza I will be famous google it. It's time to reinvestigate Columbine. As many as 75% of school shooters refer to Columbine. Most believe that the shooters were angry at their classmates for bullying. Some, just like Adam are raped children who identify with the Raped shooters of Columbine. The deaths of the Columbine and Sandy hook children happened because of a rape in a park on a dark January night.

Am Jessica Cris from Canada  After a 8 months relationship with my boyfriend, he changed suddenly and stopped contacting me regularly, he would come up with excuses of not seeing me all the time. He stopped answering my calls and my sms and he stopped seeing me regularly. I then started catching him with different girls friends several times but every time he would say that he love me and that he needed some time to think about our relationship. But after l contacted Dr. AGUBA of agubaspelltemple@yahoo.com he cast a love spell and after a day, my boyfriend started contacting me regularly and we moved in together after a few months and he was more open to me than before and he started spending more time with me than his friends. We eventually got married and we now have been married happily for 3 years with a son. Ever since Dr. AGUBA of agubaspelltemple@yahoo.com helped me, my partner is very stable, faithful and closer to me than before. is Facebook address is agubaspelltemple@yahoo.com.

Am Julia Ferguson from Canada Life can be very displeasing especially when we loose the ones we love and cherish so much. in this kind of situation where one loses his/her soul mate there are several dangers engage in it. one may no longer be able to do the things he was doing before then success will be very scarce and happiness will be rare. that person was created to be with you for without him things may fall apart. That was my experience late last year. but thank god today i am happy with him again. all thanks to DR Paloma, i was nearly loosing hope until i saw an article on how DR Paloma could cast a love spell to make lovers come back. There is no harm in trying, i said to my self. i contacted him via email: palomaspelltemple@yahoo.com. words will not be enough to appreciate what he has done for me. i have promised to share the good news as long as i live

I wanted to give you an update on my situation. On January 2th, 2013  I requested a binding love spell be cast on my boyfriend. His eyes roamed to any woman that passed us and it made me feel horrible. I am happy to report that a 2days after I requested the spell he proposed to me. We have been married for months now, we are expecting our first child in January, 9th, 2014  and he no longer has eyes for any other woman. I was greatly impressed with the fast results and the personal attention I was shown during the casting and beyond. Dr. Ekaka you are really powerful …. i will advice you guys to contact him if you need any help.. ekakaspelltemple@yahoo.com

you don't need guns to kill lots of people in minutes... any number of explosive devices can kill everyone in the area in seconds.. gasoline in a 1/2 filled gas can with a burning rag.. Need I go on.

If anyone really means to protect people/ children, if that is what they intended, they would have immediately posted guards in schools like they did in public buildings after 9-11. There were multiple laws in place that "kept" nutso from doing what he did and we still did it. The blame lays with his parents. We can't prosecute his mother but his absentee father is responsible, he knew he was a time bomb and washed his hands of him. I don't care if he was over 18 he was far from an adult, they knew of the danger and didn't act responsable. I'm sure a lawyer would find a law that matches this crime. If the second amendment is "so fluid" than any law can be worked to lock up the father.

Indeed, let us "come to terms" with the Newtown Tragedy, and Mass Killings.  Abortion is Mass Killing.  Abortion Must Be Stopped;  it increases the tolerance level for Mass Killing because it is carried out (murder of the innocent, the unborn)under aegis of LAW.

The LAW of THE LAND

To stop all mass killing by guns, however, is a different matter (slightly) and I want to be really sure that the President is doing only what is required BY LAW in the case of Executive Order.

Do you believe the President BY LAW was required to enact the massive Government Debt Increases mandated by "quantitative easing"?

Do you believe the President BY LAW has the authority to order, authorize, sanction or approve the killing of American Citizens, Persons of Foreign Nations, Suspect Persons or so-called Terrorists without trial, arrest, review or oversight?  This also increases the tolerance for murder generally, if allowed to continue.

do you see where I'm going?  if you condone,  or allow one of these things you have to say that, well, Sandy Hook Elementary School was "another" killing of innocents; and in the face of the facts, that it is tragic, but different only in instrumentality.

Actually, Connecticut already has a ban on assault rifles in place... Sec. 53-202c. Possession of assault weapon prohibited. Class D felony. (a) Except as provided in section 53-202e, any person who, within this state, possesses any assault weapon, except as provided in sections 29-37j, 53-202a to 53-202k, inclusive, and 53-202o and subsection (h) of section 53a-46a, shall be guilty of a class D felony and shall be sentenced to a term of imprisonment of which one year may not be suspended or reduced; except that a first-time violation of this subsection shall be a class A misdemeanor if (1) the person presents proof that he lawfully possessed the assault weapon prior to October 1, 1993, and (2) the person has otherwise possessed the firearm in compliance with subsection (d) of section 53-202d.

ErikMartin

You left out the "assault weapon" angle.  Namely the idea that if the "assault weapon" he used, is somehow more deadly than the two handguns he had with him and didn't use, and whether more, less, or the same number of people would be dead if the AR-15 had been banned.

Speculation must stop? If we were provided facts speculation might at least be minimized.

We DON'T know the facts. We don't know if Adam Lanza killed anybody. Fingerprints on guns, magazines, clips would help.

We still don't know if the guns in his proximity in death were used to kill anybody. Medical examiner Carver said all the deaths of students and staff at Sandy Hook were caused by rifle, not handgun. The assault rifle found at Sandy Hook was in the backseat of a car in the parking lot, not in the school. The car was not registered to Adam's mom. Did the ballistics match the gun found outside? How did Adam Lanza do so much damage with a gun that was outside in the backseat of someone else's car? Another long gun was found in the trunk of a car but that was obviously a shotgun, not a Bushmaster AR-15.

If that black Honda belonged to a drug felon working with the FBI, Chris Rodia, how did Adam get to the school?

Even the parents don't have first hand knowledge what happened to their children because ME Carver has "great" photographers who gave them secondhand information about their children. The school was evacuated finally in the dark of night. Caskets were closed and locked!

Lt. Vance warned that nobody should be discussing this on social media under penalty of ...law? Following two years of the threat of indefinite detention, that warning seemed ominous...

Let's look at this, "There are exactly two rock-solid, actionable facts in the Adam Lanza story. He lived in a home filled with firearms. And had he not had access to semi-automatic weapons, he would not have been able to take 26 lives in a matter of minutes."

Actually neither if those are rock solid our actionable facts. 1. Is an exaggeration. 2. Is a conjecture. I thought Time would have an editor or two on staff.

Horrble tragedy happens, lone gun man or anti-social nut, no hard evidence, police take them out without any hard physical proof, body buried at sea or just disappears. Sounds familiar. Is this the new normal? Guess what, James Holmes will be found too insane to stand trial and then we'll never know what really happened at the Aurora Colorado shootings either.

What must stop is shoddy journalism that refuses to dig deep and get the facts. We have little or no facts to support the whole official version of what happened at Sandy Hook, so much so, that most people do not believe the official version anymore. We want investigative journalism. We want the truth, we want facts.

The Speculation About Adam Lanza Must Stop. If you're curious, don't be, because you will never know
even parts of the truth. It's best if you take your mind off it by watching feel-good reality shows where people
often cry, or head to the mall and buy replacements for all the stuff you've recently purchased that no longer works.
Whatever you do, don't think, (or speculate).

I've been reading TIME for more than thirty years, and am thankful for having had access to it's pages, particularly when I was a child.

Reading Judith Warner's piece was physically painful. It was worse than seeing a favorite actor in a terrible comedy film, because it was an ass-kissing performance that ignored the seriousness of people getting killed. I'm shocked that TIME would print such obvious -b. s.

Now that I think about it, I shouldn't be shocked.

This entire premise is silly and no more fact than anything else you are arguing against "There are exactly two rock-solid, actionable facts in the Adam Lanza story. He lived in a home filled with firearms. And had he not had access to semi-automatic weapons, he would not have been able to take 26 lives in a matter of minutes." This man's mother worked at this school so he clearly would have had more access than others. He could have easily and without chance of getting in trouble put some kind of poison in a pot of something cooking in the lunch room, he could have driven a speeding SUV across the playground at recess time ... making the assumption that this well thought out and planned crime by a crazy man couldn't have happened without guns is more than short sighted it's just plain stupid. Would it have somehow made you feel better about these poor people losing their lives had it been done by some other means?

I think it's funny how the title of the article says "The Speculation Must Stop" and then the concluding paragraphs are just more speculation. If you want speculation to stop, then someone needs to report some real evidence of something.

People need to form their own opinions about what this shooting actually means for America, but we can't, because we have no clear or reliable information on what actually happened. No photos, no surveillance, just the words of several journalists, cops and politicians that no one feels they can really trust. If you want speculation to stop, then stop speculating yourself and start reporting, Judith.

Speculation shoudln't stop if it can help find a motive.

Here’s a motive for Adam Lanza’s massacre – Adam was raped by a local, convicted Catholic priest, Fr John Castaldo, when Adam was 6 years old, and was taking revenge against other 6 year olds. Here's the verified evidence:

http://neilallen76.wordpress.com/2012/12/19/why-adam-lanza-massacred-children-at-sandy-hook-newtown-a-theory/

It can’t be proven yet, but it is the best explanation yet for why Adam would want to take revenge against other 6 year olds, since no one protected him when he was 6 years old.

This article is ridiculously void of meaningful content and facts.  I find myself incredulous that it even got published.  We will never know exactly what the full circumstances in this tragic situation are.  But it is abundantly clear that throwing the Constitution of the United States out the window of world history isn't an answer.  Why is the author crying for more restrictions on the honest, upstanding and law-abiding citizen because some sociopathic mentally ill moron and his significantly less than intelligent mother thought that leaving guns unsecured in the home, with a mentally disabled child was a good idea?

It is exactly the fact that the states first look at services for the mentally ill to cut when the ends of the budget don't meet.  It is a fact that Mr. Lanza should obviously have been institutionalized, which is reportedly what his mother was trying to do around the time of the horrific incident.  The father leaving the home and divorcing the mom four years ago, knowing full well that she couldn't handle him is also a problem.  But the Bill of Rights is NOT to blame here.  Fundamental American liberties that deadbolt the door to tyranny and despotism should not be unbolted because some idiot 20 year old kid's brain wasn't operating properly.

Miss, Ms., or Mrs. Warner I am a little confused with your two rock-solid, actionable facts in the Adam Lanza story. He lived in a house full of guns and if he did not have access to simi-automatic firearms he would not have had the ability to take 26 human lives in the matter of minutes. Let me give you two more rock-solid, actionable facts. I live in a house full of guns, 22 of them if I counted correctly and of those 22, 9 are handguns, 12 are rifles and 1is a shotgun. Of all those, 6 are black powder, 2 are antiques (circa 1760's and 1800's), 3 are pellet guns, 4 are air soft, 1 is a speargun (used for underwater fishing), 2 high powered rifles, 3 .22 cal rifles and my oldest that I purchased when I was in the fourth grade, a muzzleloader Avon cologne bottle. The most important are the 10 simi-automatics. I have two children, 21 and 22 years of age. They now own some of these guns. One plays a lot of violent video games. Now with all that being said, what is your point? My children have been taught to use their guns safely and only in a safe location. They are both very stable tax-paying working citizens as well as their mom and myself. Our whole family lives in a house full of firearms and 10 of them are simi-automatics. Again, what is your point?

Is it jus me, or does this really seem like a slow-motion JFK controversy.  Conflicting information, News footage, a Second suspect dressed in black and camo, no Security Video from the Sandy Hook Elementary School, an apparent Rifle (assault rifle?) found in the trunk of Mr. Lanza's car?  Mr. Lanza was NOT being treated by a Physician and was NOT being prescribed or taking psychotropic medication? Linda Lanza, NOR her son were ever videoed or signed in at any of the many Shooting Ranges anywhere near Newtown, CT? Mrs. Lanza had NO "prepper supplies" in her home?  It is conjuring at best, auguring the emotions and creating tension beyond the breaking point.  Does this show have a narrator?

Blockbuster information may be available from Russian Military Intelligence.  Seems they have a synchronous "Big Boy" Spy satellite parked over New London to spy on the US Submarine Fleet/Training Center which happened to be pointed towards the Sandy Hook Elementary School at the time immediately before, During and After the shootings.  Speculation is that if no one else on earth really knows what actually happened, someone, somewhere in Russia has the straight dope; watching with great interest, no doubt, albeit from 22,000 miles straight up.  Pray he/she is not a double agent.

After viewing video after video on youtube of news clips, the interviews, with supposed family, medical examiner, cops, etc, etc, I can only come to one conclusions---This whole story stinks to high heaven! @SAIrby Just how rock solid are the facts about the children who died? Their parents were only shown photographs from ME Carver's "great" photographers. Evidence from the cime scene was only brought out under the cover of night. Closed coffins, locked. What DO we REALLY know?

This article jumps to the conclusion that Adam Lanza killed his mother...do we know that on the basis of evidence or speculation by law enforcement? According to sources who have discussed the case with local police, the press releases were coming in from Washington DC. Is that connected to US  AttorneyGeneral Holder's visits with Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy to discuss the new gun control strategy, Project Longevity two weeks before Sandy Hook became news?

We are being rushed to face new gun control legislation while being stonewalled about what really happened. That's not how participatory democracy in a constitutional republic is supposed to work.

@DavidRodgers  We don't even have THOSE facts. So far we don't even know that there was an Adam Lanza. The death certificate could not even be authenticated because the "authorities" refused to release it! Adam Lanza apparently didn't exist for his family, either. He wasn't even named in his mother's obituary. There is no academic record, no driver's license, no birth record, just the word of people we don't know. We can't be certain that the guns belonged to Nancy Lanza because that information is withheld. Nothing that we are told can be authenticated because we have seen so many lies already that even the most basic facts are to be questioned.  We are the Principals but we are allowing our Agents to perform their agency without verification unless we maintain vigilance.

@DavidRodgersCalling people silly and stupid, along with your crass challenge, won't win your point - let's examine what you are saying. I see that you make assumptions based on unverified, reported circumstantial evidence, although complete facts have never been released. The investigation reportedly will go on for months. The media did have contradictory facts until the official story became "standardized," and there are unresolved issues. It is true that guns allow harm faster, but it is also true that they allow defense faster. There are cases where armed citizens have prevented harm. It is the mind behind the crime that must be dealt with. The temptation is to over-react with unwise legislation that is in some respects clearly not constitutional, thus setting further precedent for the ignoring (or ignorance) of individual rights. And, it is highly unlikely that legislating and controlling every form of harm will create safety but rather a police state that is intolerable...while criminals simply continue to enjoy the drama & increased suspense. There is a middle way, but political forces are usually unbalanced and accustomed to pleasing voters. Fear is a poor advisor.

1. There is no evidence that Nancy Lanza worked at the school. In fact she didn't even hold certification in Connecticut.

2. There has been no evidence of semi-automatic weapons IN the school, just a Bushmaster AR-15 found in the backseat of a car that is NOT registered to Nancy Lanza, but to Chris Rodia, a FBI informant. The long gun removed from the trunk of a car at night was a shotgun, not a long rifle, certainly not an assault weapon.

3. People at the school had never heard of or seen Nancy Lanza at Sandy Hook Elementary.

@DavidRodgers David, this man's mother did not work at Sandy Hook, never worked at Sandy Hook and the mainstream media acknowledged this. Why don't you look just a little deeper and look into the link between these psych drugs and violence. ssristories.com Mr. Lanza is likely a victim here as well. I agree with you that Judith Warner is a non journalist, in fact she is a mouthpiece for the Psychiatric and Pharmaceutical industries... she has proven that by her slanted writing. Psych drugs help these children to focus and live productive normal lives. They DO NOT "numb them till they're psychotic" and in fact makes them less violent and volital. The truth is that most parents of mentally ill children choose NOT to medicate unless they have no other choice, and that's usually because they are a danger to themselves and others. Yes there is evidence claimed to be the rifle bullet casings in the school and the observation of  Medical Examiner Carver that the wounds were from a long rifle...but the AR-15 was not originally found IN the school but outside in someone else's car in the backseat.

@SarahSullivan @Shimie @SarahSullivan @Shimie Ma'am with all due respect for your very tragic family situation I do not need to have a child with such issues to understand what is going on with the SSRI drugs. I am getting my information straight from those psychiatrists who are not afraid to speak out. I have studied the un-corrupted data (definitely not the drug company trail test offered to the FDA which is completely biased) I have worked in Mental Health. I have a very good position to have an opinion on this. Since when did having or not having an ill child disqualify anyone from giving a reasonably stated opinion? You read Ms Warner's article, is her child ill like yours. That gag you are attempting to stuff on me is invalid as the argument you put forth falls apart on itself. As to the accuracy of the data on the link between the SSRI drugs as well as Benzodiazapines and violence is staggeringly under-reported. Have you madam ever had a friend or family member commit suicide while on these medications??? Have you watched them go from having a mild grief issue or stress... see one of the drug doctors put them onto SSRI's and watch them transform If not, then by your own definition how dare you! These are mood altering drugs, they cannot measure brain chemistry nor can they tell you how these drugs work, they can only give you their best guess... but they are messing with the firing mechanisms of neurotransmitters. Are you familiar with akathisia it is a direct affect of the SSRI's and is a marked internal restlessness anger, upset sometimes going into psychosis, the will then up the meds making it worse or switch SSRI's then adding benzo's to counter act the affects. Have you ever heard of Benzo rages. Most likely not, because the Psych doctors will say that "they are generally well tolerated" Are you aware of the male children in my family who were targeted for medication by the school systems... and lo and behold, they grew up to be highly intelligent well adjusted young men. I guess they just had restless little boys have a hard time sitting in their desks syndrome. So don't you ever suggest I know not of what I speak. I am sorry for your troubles, but do not ever suggest to me that I remain silent on this topic most especially when there are the bodies of teens, little children and family's who are being devastated by the fallout from SSRI's not to mention what the refusal to cut the cord from big pharmaceutical companies is doing to our country.
