Deborah Gorman-Smith and Michele McLaughlin

Deborah Gorman-Smith is a professor at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration, a senior research fellow with the nonpartisan Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy and the director of the Chicago Center for Youth Violence Prevention, one of six academic centers for excellence funded by the CDC.

Michele McLaughlin is president of the Washington-based advocacy group Knowledge Alliance. She was the senior education policy adviser for K-12 issues for Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, and has also worked on education policy for the American Federation of Teachers and Teach for America.
