Occupy Wall Street’s Message Can’t Be Wrapped with a Bow

Thirty years of corporate greed, class warfare and unfair taxation do not fit neatly into a crawl at the bottom of a TV screen.

Critics of the Occupy Wall Street protesters sneer at their apparent lack of one central, coherent message. It’s not that the protesters don’t have a message — it’s that the media doesn’t know how to package it. Thirty years of corporate greed, class warfare and unfair taxation do not fit neatly into a crawl at the bottom of a TV screen. It’s understandable that the media is having such a hard time cramming their message into a 10-second sound bite.

What I don’t understand is the determined effort by conservatives to vilify and ridicule the protests. Do middle class conservatives think they’re not being exploited by rich corporations? Do middle class conservatives think they are not affected by the wide range of income inequality in the United States? Do middle class conservatives think the movement is not for their benefit, too? That’s what I don’t understand.
