Why Americans Should Adopt American

So many American children do not get the same chance at a loving home

As an advocate for abused and neglected children, I’m always saddened to read of the large number of foreign children adopted by Americans [“The Baby Deficit”]. So many American children do not get the same chance at a loving home, but instead grow up in foster care or group homes, always hoping for a loving parent who wants them. These children grow up feeling abandoned, once by their parents and again by unseen, hoped-for parents. Their dream is to be part of a loving family.

Are would-be adoptive parents willing to cope with the problems a foreign child has, but not an American child? Do they think that all will be well for these children because they live in the United States? I wish it were so.
