If the ill-advised recommendation not to have PSA tests done on men under age 50 had existed when my brother was 46 years old, he would have been dead from prostate cancer by age 47. A routine physical, which included a PSA blood test, was positive. Surgical removal of the prostate gland was recommended and confirmed by a second doctor’s opinion. That surgery revealed an unusually aggressive tumor that was on the point of metastasizing. My brother is now 61. Based on his experience, my gut feeling tells me that his diagnosis wasn’t an isolated case; therefore, the “just say no” advice on this test is better ignored.
