The Church’s Contraception Rules Are Not an Attack on Women

Declaring that the legitimate religious objections of Catholic healthcare providers are a cover for an attack on women is the height of narrow-minded arrogance.

It’s disappointing to see Mr. Padgett erroneously declare in “The Catholic Contraction” that the Catholic Church’s legal challenges to contraception requirements are “ultimately” not about religious freedom, but women’s freedom. He may feel the requirements restrict women’s freedom, but declaring that the legitimate religious objections of Catholic healthcare providers are a cover for an attack on women is the height of narrow-minded arrogance. He would have earned a nice F from any logic professor.

Just as it would be nice for Mr. Padgett to expand his horizon to include other perspectives, it would also be nice to see TIME step outside its timeworn position as the megaphone for liberal American “Catholics.” Smart Catholics who agree with the church’s moral teachings exist all across this country, and the cafeteria Catholics your magazine gives a voice to come across as intellectual lightweights.
