Ever the provocateur (she made her debut in the New York Times as a grad student in 1991 with an op-ed decrying “date rape hysteria”), in the wake of accusations against former presidential candidate Herman Cain, Roiphe argued that women weren’t really bothered by sexual harassment. “Show me a smart, competent young professional woman who is utterly derailed by a verbal unwanted sexual advance or an inappropriate comment about her appearance, and I will show you a rare spotted owl.” Critics were plentiful, even on Slate where Roiphe is a columnist, and Salon later proclaimed her a Top Hack of 2011.
