Muammar Gaddafi
After his death at the hands of rebels in October 2011 and days of display in a Misrata meat locker, former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was buried in a secret location in the Libyan desert. Libya’s Transitional National Council was at pains to show that the burial followed Islamic law: Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam told the BBC the burial was in accordance with a ruling saying that “his body should not be buried in Muslim cemeteries and should not be buried in a known place to avoid any sedition.” Sadiq Badi, deputy chief of the NTC, told The Guardian, “We gave him all the Islamic rituals that we would give any Muslim.”
