Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein shouts as he receives his guilty verdict during his trial on November 5, 2006 in Baghdad
After Hussein’s execution in 2006, Iraq’s new leaders had to choose between family members who wanted the body buried in Hussein’s home village and officials who wanted a secret, unmarked grave. After U.S. pressure, the body was released to his family. When it arrived in Hussein’s native village of Awja, it was temporarily buried in a local mosque, then moved to a compound Hussein had built for himself. After too many fawning visits, the government banned organized trips in 2009.
